Switzerland holds a referendum on the proposal to set a population cap of ten million people.

Swiss citizens will participate in a national referendum on Sunday to decide whether to support a proposal to impose a limit on population. This referendum is being compared to the Brexit referendum in the UK, and if passed, it will have far-reaching implications for the Swiss economy and the relationship between the Bern government and the European Union. The proposed constitutional amendment was put forward by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, motivated by concerns among the public about immigration, pressure on public services, and housing shortages. The proposal stipulates that by 2050, the total population of Switzerland should not exceed 10 million. Official forecasts, however, indicate that Switzerland's population could reach this number as early as the beginning of the 2040s. This measure to restrict population size through legislation is unprecedented. Meanwhile, right-wing groups in Europe are stepping up efforts to tighten immigration controls, fueled by public discontent over rising living costs, weak economic growth, and security issues.
