According to foreign media reports, informed sources said that SpaceX encountered technical challenges while developing and operating the Grok artificial intelligence model using the Memphis Colossus 1 data center, and decided to rent out the entire capacity of the data center to Anthropic. The company originally planned to use cluster of three data center campuses to train its cutting-edge AI models with large-scale computing power. However, delays were encountered when connecting Colossus 1 to the other two sites over 10 miles away, and the aging network infrastructure exacerbated the issue. In addition to the latency issue, attempts to integrate Colossus 1 with other facilities were also affected by hardware differences. The facility is equipped with multiple generations of NVIDIA chips including Hopper and Blackwell, as well as some older accelerators. Colossus 2 and Colossus 3 are more uniformly built around the NVIDIA Blackwell chip.
