The main event of World Environment Day in 2026 was held on the 5th in the Gedar Aliyev Center in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The event, with the theme "Learn from Nature, Focus on Climate, Create Together for the Future," was co-hosted by the Azerbaijan government and the United Nations Environment Programme, aiming to call on the international community to strengthen climate actions, protect natural ecosystems, and address the multiple challenges brought by climate change. UN Secretary-General Guterres said in a video message that warning signals are everywhere, and the past 11 years have been the hottest on record. The destruction caused by climate change goes far beyond rising temperatures, including air pollution, land degradation, ecosystem collapse, and loss of biodiversity. He called for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, reducing methane emissions, protecting forests, land, and oceans, and helping communities worldwide adapt to the impacts of climate change.
