Terry Duffy, CEO of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), expressed "serious concerns" about the rise of so-called "perpetual futures". Perpetual futures are a type of increasingly popular financial contract that has recently received critical approval from US regulators. Duffy pointed out that these "perpetual contracts" have almost no practical use for institutional investors, but at the same time expose retail traders to excessive risk. Duffy said, "I have serious concerns about the design of these contracts. I do not want to see those who do not understand the products end up being forced out of the market due to contract liquidation, as they should not have been involved in such contracts in the first place."
