UAW goes on strike at key truck supplier factory for General Motors.
Nearly 1,000 workers at a car supplier in Michigan, USA, went on strike, causing a halt in the production of key components for General Motors' midsize and full-size pickups. Workers at the American Axle factory in Three Rivers, Michigan, are at a standstill with the company over a new labor contract. The workers state that despite American Axle making significant profits in recent years due to strong sales of GM trucks, their wages have not returned to their 2008 levels; that year, they agreed to a 50% wage cut to keep the factory running during an economic downturn. "For 18 years, these union members built a profit empire for you, but they are treated like garbage. They accepted wage cuts and benefit reductions. They poured their hearts into this factory," said Sean Feeney, president of the United Auto Workers union, in a live broadcast announcing the strike on Sunday evening. The strike officially began at 12:01 a.m. on Monday. "We will continue the strike until this company comes to its senses and gives these workers the dignity and respect they deserve," Feeney added.
