Chilean authorities reported that a strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the important mining area of Antofagasta on Monday afternoon, causing some mining operations to be affected, but fortunately no casualties were reported and key infrastructure was not damaged. This strong earthquake occurred in the heart of Chile, the world's largest copper-producing country, but major mining companies have reported limited damage. The United States Geological Survey recorded the depth of the earthquake at 109 kilometers. A spokesperson for Chile's state-owned copper company stated that due to poor visibility in the mines or specific areas experiencing power outages, the company has suspended some operations. Both BHP and Antofagasta Mining, two mining companies, have reported that their operations were not affected by the earthquake.
