The Chinese proposal convenes a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduces the situation.
On May 22nd, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiajun held a routine press conference. During the conference, Guo Jiajun announced that as the rotating president of the United Nations Security Council for the month, China will host a high-level meeting of the Security Council on May 26th, with the theme "Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter, and Strengthening the International System with the UN at its core." Politburo member of the Communist Party of China and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend the meeting in New York.
A reporter asked if the spokesperson could introduce the concept of the high-level meeting of the Security Council and what message Foreign Minister Wang Yi hopes to convey. Guo Jiajun stated that in the rapidly evolving world with a century of changes, upheavals and transformations intertwine, and wars and conflicts occur one after another, the international system with the United Nations at its core is facing unprecedented challenges and impacts.
Guo Jiajun introduced that as the rotating president of the UN Security Council for May, China proposed to convene this high-level meeting of the Security Council to focus on the timeless value of the UN Charter, to abide by and practice the purposes and principles of the Charter, and to strengthen the authority and effectiveness of the UN and the Security Council, which are issues of common concern to the international community. The meeting will be chaired by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, open to all UN member states, and many foreign ministers and senior representatives have confirmed their attendance. UN Secretary-General Guterres will also be present to brief the meeting.
"We look forward to all parties using this meeting as an opportunity to revisit the lofty goals established by the Charter, reaffirm their steadfast commitment to multilateralism, and revitalize the position and role of the UN with greater unity and responsibility, rallying greater strength for reforming and improving global governance," said Guo Jiajun.
