While the email did not endorse a merger between United and American Airlines, Silva used Kirby's proposal as an opportunity to once again criticize the management of American Airlines - due to poor company performance, the management of American Airlines is facing pressure from unions. United Airlines reportedly announced last month that, following initial contact, they terminated their merger plans with American Airlines after their competitor refused to engage. American Airlines had previously stated that a merger with United Airlines would be detrimental to competition and consumers.
