On March 3, a United Airlines passenger plane was preparing to land at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, United States, when it collided with a lamppost and a moving trailer on a nearby highway. The plane eventually landed safely, with no injuries to passengers and only minor injuries to the trailer driver. Regulatory authorities have launched an investigation. The incident occurred as the plane, carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members, was departing from Venice, Italy. The Federal Aviation Administration statement said that the Boeing aircraft struck a lamppost on the highway near Newark Airport at around 2 p.m. local time, causing minor damage to the plane. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stated that the incident resulted in damage to the lamppost and trailer. The trailer driver received minor injuries and was discharged after medical treatment. The airport resumed normal operations after confirming the safety of the runway. A spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police said that the plane's underbelly collided with the lamppost and trailer. According to US media reports, one of the runways at Newark Liberty International Airport is perpendicular to the adjacent highway, and arriving flights fly low over the highway to prepare for landing. United Airlines stated that they are currently assessing the damage to the plane, and the involved crew will be temporarily grounded during the investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations, with a preliminary report expected within 30 days.
