American officials stated that the initiative to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz may not involve direct protection by US warships.
The Axios news website in the United States reported on the 3rd that two American officials said that the "guidance" announced by President Trump that day for the stranded ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz may not necessarily include direct escort by US warships for commercial ships. The report said that one official stated that US warships would stay in the "vicinity" of the Strait of Hormuz to prevent potential attacks by the Iranian military on commercial ships passing through the strait when necessary. The officials also said that the US military would provide information to commercial ships regarding the optimal maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz, especially in areas where Iranian military has not deployed mines. According to the Wall Street Journal on the 3rd, a senior US official said that Trump's announcement of the guidance for the stranded ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz did not involve US warships providing escort for these ships. The official stated that this new measure is a set of "mechanisms aimed at coordinating the operation of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz," involving various governments, insurance companies, and shipping organizations.
