Texas "zombie wells" surged by 50%, prompting new anti-leak regulations.
The state of Texas in the United States is planning to introduce new regulations to accelerate the response to the issue of "zombie wells". This year, the number of sites leaking toxic wastewater in the state has increased by over 50%. The Texas Railroad Commission is proposing new emergency measures, including closing wastewater injection operations within a two and a half mile radius of leaking wells, or forcing nearby operators to clean up the site themselves. The regulatory agency hopes to see operators "more involved" in reducing well pressure and water volume, and is considering two approaches to responding to leaks, including shutting down injection wells or entrusting response work to nearby operators.
