Canadian Prime Minister: The carbon pricing schedule is part of negotiations with the province of Alberta.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that negotiations are ongoing with the provincial government regarding the timing of when the industrial carbon price in the oil-rich province of Alberta must reach $130 per ton. The two levels of government have signed a memorandum of understanding paving the way for a new oil pipeline and have requested both parties to reach an agreement on carbon pricing by April 1. However, as the industry believes that industrial carbon pricing will reduce Canada's competitiveness globally, the agreement has not yet been reached. On April 23, Carney reiterated the agreed-upon carbon price, but did not specify when this price should be reached. "This is part of the discussions we are having," Carney said.
