Due to the impact of the situation in the Middle East, the transportation of energy sources such as crude oil has been disrupted, causing some Asian countries to face shortages of chemical products. The daily operations of multiple industries, from manufacturing to retail, have been affected. In Japan, both chemical factories and fish market vendors are suffering from cost pressures due to the shortage of naphtha. Although Japan has sufficient strategic reserves of crude oil, the situation with naphtha is entirely different. According to reports from the Japan Times, 40% of the country's naphtha comes directly from the Middle East, and about 40% of the domestically produced naphtha needs to be refined from crude oil sourced primarily from the Middle East. Therefore, companies are gradually passing on cost pressures to consumers. The large Japanese chemical company, Asahi Kasei, recently announced that due to the impact of the situation in the Middle East, naphtha prices have almost doubled, and the company has "no choice" but to raise product prices. Everyday items like cling film have already begun to increase in price. Another Japanese chemical company, Otsuka Yu, also announced that it will raise the prices of its kitchen products. Starting from June, the prices of freezer bags and instant food packaging will increase by at least 25% to 35%.
