Tesla becomes the first customer of Intel's advanced 14A chip technology.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that Tesla plans to use Intel's advanced 14A manufacturing process to make chips in its Terafab project, making Tesla the first major customer of Intel's technology. This move marks a significant breakthrough for Intel as the company has been working to attract external customers to use its chip manufacturing technology. Intel's upcoming 14A chip manufacturing technology is designed to compete with major rival TSMC, but Intel has not disclosed its major external customers yet. Intel's stock rose 3.6% in after-hours trading. Intel had previously stated that it was discussing 14A with key customers but declined to comment. Musk said during Tesla's earnings call, "Considering that 14A may be fairly mature or ready for scale-up in Terafab, 14A seems like the right choice, and we have a good relationship with Intel." This move could boost investor confidence in Intel's next-generation manufacturing process, as the company had previously faced challenges in chip production.
