The state of Florida in the United States has launched a criminal investigation into the campus shooting incident involving OpenAI.
Florida Attorney General James Uusmael said on Tuesday that the state will launch a criminal investigation into OpenAI and its artificial intelligence application ChatGPT, related to a shooting incident last April at Florida State University that resulted in two deaths and six injuries. "This chatbot will suggest which gun to use for the shooter, which ammunition is suitable for which firearm, and whether the firearm is effective at close range," Uusmael said at a press conference. "If the person on the other end of the screen is a real person, we will charge them with murder." Uusmael's office stated that the investigation will determine whether "OpenAI should be held criminally responsible for ChatGPT's behavior in the shooting incident." A spokesperson for OpenAI said that the shooting incident was a tragedy, but the company does not bear any responsibility for it. "In this case, ChatGPT provided fact-based answers to questions, information that is widely available in public resources on the internet. It did not encourage or promote any illegal or harmful behavior."
