U.S. Navy officials announced on Tuesday their plans to deploy the "Patriot" missile defense system on U.S. warships to better protect American vessels from enemy drones and missiles. Lockheed Martin Corporation announced on Tuesday that they had been awarded a $200 million contract to integrate the missile into a wider weapons system deployed on Navy ships. Pentagon procurement documents show that the U.S. Navy has requested $1.7 billion in their 2027 budget for the purchase of the company's most advanced version of the missile - the PAC-3 MSE interceptor. The agreement did not provide specific timing details. In response to Iran's retaliatory drone and missile attacks in the Persian Gulf region in the wake of the war initiated by the U.S., this highlights the urgent need for military reserves of these often costly interception systems.
