In March, the retail sales of the control group increased by 0.7% compared to the previous month, and this data is used for GDP consumption estimation by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. In a report, Capital Economics wrote, "This increase is much stronger than our anticipated flat level." Despite the rise in gasoline prices, overall retail sales data showed an increase, but even when excluding gasoline, automobiles, building materials, and food services, the control group data also recorded growth, reflecting strong underlying consumer spending.
