Italian energy giant Eni Group has discovered large offshore natural gas resources in Indonesia, which may help the country alleviate the imminent energy shortage. According to an email statement released by the company, Eni discovered 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 300 million barrels of condensate at the Gergaji-1 well in East Kalimantan province. The company has a joint venture with Malaysia's national oil company. According to data from the US Energy Information Administration, Indonesia's proven natural gas reserves by 2024 are 33.8 trillion cubic feet. This discovery comes at a time when Indonesia is facing the challenge of declining natural gas reserves and increasing demand, which may force the country to increase its natural gas imports. Despite being the sixth largest liquefied natural gas supplier in the world, Indonesia's net exports have decreased by about 50% from 2010 to 2025, according to data collected by Kpler.
