Italian energy giant Eni Group has discovered large offshore natural gas resources in Indonesia, which may help the country alleviate its upcoming energy shortage. According to a company email statement, Eni discovered 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 300 million barrels of condensate at the Gergaji-1 well in East Kalimantan province. The company has a joint venture with Malaysia's national oil company, Petronas. According to data from the US Energy Information Administration, Indonesia's proven natural gas reserves by 2024 were 33.8 trillion cubic feet. This discovery comes at a time when Indonesia is facing a decrease in natural gas reserves and an increase in demand, which may force the country to increase its natural gas imports. Despite being the sixth largest liquefied natural gas supplier in the world, Indonesia's net export volume, according to data collected by Kpler, has decreased by about 50% from 2010 to 2025.
