The Director of the International Energy Agency said in an interview published on Friday that Italy should reconsider its decision to abandon nuclear power in its quest to enhance energy security and economic stability. Italy currently does not have any operating nuclear reactors and relies heavily on energy imports, including nuclear power from neighboring countries like France. After two national referendums in 1987 and 2011, Italy banned the construction of nuclear power plants, but the government is now drafting regulations to lift this ban using new nuclear technology. When asked whether discussions in Italy about restarting nuclear power were the right choice, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, said: "I know Italy has rejected nuclear power in two referendums. But two years ago, I said in Rome that if I were the Italian government, I would reconsider this decision and conduct a more in-depth study on nuclear power."
