Microsoft (MSFT.O) has agreed to lease capacity in a data center in Norway. The project was initially planned for use by OpenAI and promoted as part of OpenAI's "Gateway to the Stars" program. Cloud infrastructure provider Nscale stated that Microsoft will be leasing 30,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin chips from its park located within the Arctic Circle in Narvik, Norway. This is an expansion on Microsoft's previous commitment of investing $6.2 billion in the location. According to sources, OpenAI had initially negotiated with Nscale to use the park's capacity for running its artificial intelligence workloads but was unable to reach an agreement. Last week, OpenAI announced a pause on a similar project in the UK due to high energy and regulatory costs, which was also being developed by Nscale. The suspension of the UK project and the failure to reach an agreement with Nscale in Norway reflect adjustments to OpenAI's previously announced large-scale infrastructure plans. A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that the company is still exploring the possibility of reaching a capacity agreement in Norway and is working with multiple partners to advance infrastructure development.
