America's relaxing of power restrictions on satellite frequency spectrum will benefit SpaceX.
The Federal Communications Commission is expected to approve rule revisions this month to relax power limits on satellite spectrum usage, greatly promoting the development of satellite broadband services like SpaceX's Starlink. The FCC announced on Wednesday that it will vote on April 30 on a measure that will allow more widespread and intensive use of wireless spectrum for space activities, with the potential of bringing $2 billion in economic benefits by increasing broadband usage. Current rules were established in the 1990s, limiting power consumption for systems like Starlink. The FCC stated that the proposed revisions could increase the capacity of satellite broadband services by seven times, resulting in higher speeds, lower costs, and greater reliability. SpaceX submitted a petition in August 2024 seeking to modify the related rules.
