Yusuke Maeyama, a researcher at the Nissho Institute for Basic Research, said that due to the risks posed by the tense situation in the Middle East and rising oil prices, the Tokyo stock market may further decline. He said, "Although there has been some optimism about the region's prospects since early April, a renewed escalation of conflict or prolonged instability could cause the stock market to fall below the low point of March, or even push the Nikkei index below the 50,000 point mark." The benchmark stock index closed down 2.4% on Thursday at 52,463.27 points.
