Middle East situation increases agricultural costs, causing Italian fruit and vegetable prices to rise.
The prices of energy, fertilizers, and other commodities continue to rise, causing a continuous increase in agricultural costs in Italy. Food prices have significantly increased in various areas, impacting the livelihood of residents. The Italian Farmers Association recently stated that as a result of the conflict in the Middle East, the rising fuel prices have led to a substantial increase in transportation costs, putting immense pressure on the entire food supply chain. Data from the Italian Agricultural and Food Market Research Institute shows that compared to the same period last year, the prices of most vegetables and fruits have increased, especially fruits. The prices of apples have increased by 3.2%, pears by 8.5%, and strawberries by a staggering 17%. This has forced many people to choose to buy cheaper fruits and vegetables or reduce their purchases. In order to control fuel prices, the Italian government recently implemented emergency tax reduction measures, lowering gasoline and diesel prices by approximately 0.25 euros per liter, and reducing liquefied petroleum gas by 0.12 euros. Tax relief on diesel fuel has also been provided for the agricultural and transportation sectors. The government has also initiated nationwide inspections to ensure that gas stations promptly implement price reductions and crack down on price speculation activities.
