The judge said the US government's ban on Anthropic is akin to punishment.
A federal judge on Tuesday stated that the actions taken by the US government against the artificial intelligence company Anthropic appear to be punitive in retaliation for the company publicizing its contract dispute with the Pentagon. Judge Rita F. Lin of the Northern District of California said during a court hearing, "This appears to be an attempt to hit Anthropic hard." She also stated that such actions "would certainly violate the First Amendment of the Constitution." The hearing was part of Anthropic's legal action to lift the Trump administration's ban on government use of the company's AI models. Lawyers for the Silicon Valley company and the US government presented their respective arguments before the judge. Judge Lin has not yet ruled on the matter, but she expressed serious doubts about the actions of the Trump administration in her opening statement. She said, "It looks like the defendants have gone too far in trying to punish Anthropic." This month, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the US government to stop being labeled as a supply chain risk company. This designation has put the Trump administration at odds with one of the industry-leading AI labs. The root of the dispute lies in the differences between the two sides regarding the use and limitations of their AI tools in national security applications. Judge Lin requested more evidence before making a ruling on Anthropic's ban request.
