Nobel Prize winner Stiglitz warns that the United States is on the brink of stagflation.
Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz has issued a serious warning: a war with Iran will bring about the "four horsemen of economic apocalypse," namely "rising oil prices, escalating food prices, economic recession, and chaos. Various negative impacts are obvious." Stiglitz, a professor at Columbia University, won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2001 and is known for his left-leaning political stance. He does not hesitate to oppose the current US government. In a recent podcast called "Monetary Matters," he criticized the war aimed at overthrowing the Iranian regime. He said, "A year ago, President Trump threw a hand grenade into the global economic system with his erratic tariff policy. Now, he has thrown another with this senseless war against Iran." Stiglitz focused on the economic impact of the war, which has been ongoing for less than two weeks. He pointed out that in the past week, oil prices have soared to over $100, and gasoline prices have risen by 17%. Due to disruptions in shipping, the cost of fertilizers has increased, affecting food prices. He also mentioned that Trump has failed to adequately replenish strategic oil reserves, so even releasing them now would not help.
