An internal memo shows that the US Department of Defense has informed its senior leadership that if they believe using AI tools from the company Anthropic is crucial to national security, they can continue using the tool after the previously announced six-month phased elimination period. The memo states that these exemptions can be granted in "extremely rare and special circumstances" and "will only be considered for critical mission activities that directly support national security operations and have no viable alternatives". The document shows that any Pentagon unit seeking an exemption must submit a comprehensive risk mitigation plan for approval.
