The U.S. State Department recently bypassed normal congressional review and used "emergency powers" to approve the sale of over 20,000 bombs worth about $650 million to Israel. Democrats in Congress criticized this move, saying it exposed the Trump administration's lack of preparedness for war with Iran. The State Department issued a statement on the evening of the 6th, saying that U.S. Secretary of State Rubio determined that there was an "emergency situation" and therefore decided to bypass congressional review to immediately approve the sale of over 20,000 bombs to Israel, including 12,000 BLU-110A/B general-purpose bombs weighing approximately 454 kilograms each as requested by Israel. The statement said that the "emergency" arms sales to Israel align with U.S. "national security and foreign policy." Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks of Congress issued a statement saying that the Trump administration has consistently claimed to be fully prepared for military strikes against Iran, but the State Department's use of "emergency powers" to bypass Congress and sell weapons to Israel shows the opposite, "This is an emergency situation created by the Trump administration itself."
