On the 8th, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, elaborated on the global governance initiative during the press conference of the two sessions. Wang Yi stated that in today's world, global challenges are constantly emerging, governance deficits are becoming more prominent, and multilateralism is facing severe challenges. President Xi Jinping's proposal for global governance is timely and has quickly received support and response from more than 150 countries and international organizations. The Secretary-General of the United Nations immediately stated that the core concept of the initiative is highly consistent with the beliefs held by the United Nations. The "Global Governance Friends Group" initiated by China has been established successively at the United Nations headquarters in New York and Geneva, with enthusiastic participation from countries, especially from global South countries. Wang Yi pointed out that the key to the widespread response to the global governance initiative lies in emphasizing the five principles of sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered approach, and action-oriented approach, which resonate with the common aspirations of the international community and reflect the shared voice of the peoples of all countries. The clearest signal emitted by the initiative is that the leading role of the United Nations must be upheld and cannot be shaken; the core role of the United Nations should be strengthened and not weakened. Despite not being perfect, without the United Nations, the world would be even worse. Setting up a separate system outside the United Nations, forming various small groups or circles, are not favored and are not sustainable. The most explicit requirement put forward by the initiative is that the United Nations needs to keep pace with the times, reform and improve its governance system, adapt to the development of the international situation in the 21st century and changes in the balance of world power. It is especially important to enhance the voice and representation of global South countries and reflect the legitimate demands of developing countries more. The goal is to build a more just and reasonable global governance system. Wang Yi stated that China, as a founding member of the United Nations, is a staunch supporter of the United Nations cause. As the largest developing country, we are more aware of the urgent expectations of global South countries. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS mechanism, in which China participates, adhere to the principles of the United Nations Charter as the primary guidelines for action, accumulating valuable experiences in exploring reforms and improvements to global governance. China calls for more countries to participate in and support the global governance initiative, working together to revitalize, uphold, and strengthen the United Nations.
