Response to the unexpected Non-Farm Payrolls: Fed Chairman Powell says it should not be ignored, but also does not need to be overanalyzed.
The non-farm payroll data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday showed a decrease in job positions in the United States in February. The data for that month was significantly impacted by the severe cold weather and a major strike at a large healthcare institution. Federal Reserve official Daley said in an interview with CNBC, "I think this simply indicates that previous expectations of a stable labor market may have been too optimistic. We are also facing the situation of inflation rates exceeding target levels, as well as rising oil prices. We do not know how long these conditions will last, but currently both of our targets are at risk." Daley added, "I think we should not ignore this report, but it is just a monthly data, and should not be overly interpreted."
