Wang Yi spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on the phone.
On March 1st, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov as scheduled. Wang Yi stated that under the promotion of China and Russia, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting yesterday on the current situation in Iran. China has always advocated for the principles of the UN Charter and opposes the use of force in international relations. The attacks launched by the United States and Israel on Iran during the Iran-US negotiations are unacceptable, openly killing a leader of a sovereign country and inciting regime change are unacceptable, all of these actions violate international law and basic norms of international relations. The current conflict has spread to the entire Persian Gulf, and the situation in the Middle East may be pushed to a dangerous abyss, China is highly concerned about this. Wang Yi pointed out that China's position is: first, immediately stop military actions. Prevent the spread and spill-over of the conflict, avoid the situation from developing into an uncontrollable state. China attaches importance to the security of Gulf countries and supports them in maintaining restraint. Second, quickly return to dialogue and negotiations. All parties should strongly promote peace and prevent war, urge the parties involved to return to the dialogue and negotiation track as soon as possible. Third, jointly oppose unilateral actions. Attacking a sovereign country without authorization from the UN Security Council is a violation of the peace foundation established after World War II. The international community should send a clear and loud message against regressing to the law of the jungle. Lavrov stated that the military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran seriously undermine the stability of the Middle East region, and Russia's position is in line with China's. Russia is willing to strengthen coordination and communication with China, and send a clear signal through platforms such as the UN and SCO, calling for an immediate halt to the war and return to diplomatic negotiations.
