According to the Nikkei Asia report, the US Supreme Court ruling that Trump's IEEPA tariffs are illegal may be a "good thing" for exporters in Southeast Asia, at least in the short term. Jon Lang, Senior Director of Economic Security Policy at the geopolitical risk consulting firm APCO and a former White House official during Trump's first term, said that countries with huge trade deficits with the US will be "temporary beneficiaries". Prior to the court ruling, the range of equivalent tariffs in the region varied from 40% in Myanmar and Laos to 19% in the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand, but now these will "decrease to 10%". Lang expects this situation to continue until tariffs are adjusted according to the Section 301 procedure or until tariffs are adjusted according to Section 232. The US will import more goods from these countries during this temporary window of opportunity.
