New York Governor Hochul has withdrawn a proposal that would have allowed commercial unmanned taxi services to operate outside of New York City. This is a blow to Alphabet's Waymo, which is seeking to aggressively expand its fleet of autonomous vehicles this year. Hochul had proposed in a policy preview report last month that companies like Waymo could apply for permits to test unmanned services. The governor's office confirmed that the plan has been withdrawn. Waymo said, "While we are disappointed by the governor's decision, we are committed to bringing our services to New York and will work with state legislators to advance this issue."
