Tesla self-driving rental car operation has had 14 accidents in 8 months.
According to a report submitted by Tesla to the US regulatory agency, the company's autonomous taxi has been in operation in Austin for 8 months and has reported 14 collision accidents, including property damage, minor injuries, and hospitalized personnel. Tesla has not disclosed the size of the autonomous taxi fleet currently deployed in Austin, but plans to expand the service to approximately 7 more cities by the middle of the year. The first accident occurred in July last year, when the company initially reported only property damage. However, Tesla submitted a supplementary report in December on the same accident, with additional information indicating minor injuries and hospitalization. Another accident that also occurred in July resulted in minor injuries. Tesla's latest report shows that 5 new accidents that occurred in December of last year and January of this year were reported in January. One of the January accidents involved a stationary autonomous taxi colliding with an Austin city bus; two other accidents involved the autonomous taxi hitting objects while reversing in a parking lot.
