Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda stated that during their regular meeting to discuss economic issues and exchange general views with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, no specific requests were made by Takaichi. After meeting with Takaichi at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo on Monday, Kuroda said, "We discussed the overall economic and financial situation." Investors and economists are trying to assess whether Takaichi, with a more stable political position, will seek to slow the central bank's rate hikes to protect economic growth, or urge the Bank of Japan to take action to support the yen. Hideo Kumano, chief economist at the Dai-Ichi Life Research Institute and former Bank of Japan official, said, "Takaichi probably wants to have this meeting as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary market speculation if they were to meet long after the election. Kuroda likely has the same idea." Since the meeting lasted only 20 minutes, it is unlikely that there was an in-depth discussion on policy paths. Kuroda declined to comment on whether Takaichi agrees with his views on the Bank of Japan's policy stance.
