According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on February 14, 2026 local time, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Foreign Minister, attended the Munich Security Conference, delivered a speech at the "China Special Session" and answered questions from the audience. When asked about the role China plays in resolving regional conflicts, especially the issue in Ukraine, Wang Yi stated that China's position is clear, that all regional hotspots should seek political solutions through dialogue and negotiation, including the situation in Ukraine. However, China is not a party directly involved and does not have decision-making authority. What we can do is urge and facilitate dialogue. We have sent special envoys to mediate and emphasized to all parties through various channels that they should ceasefire and return to the negotiation table as soon as possible. We are pleased to see that dialogue on various levels has been initiated recently, especially focusing on the core issues of the Ukraine crisis. We welcome this development. Of course, there are still significant differences among the parties, and negotiations cannot be achieved overnight. But without dialogue, where is peace? Without ongoing dialogue, a peace agreement will not be reached automatically. We encourage and support all efforts for peace and will continue to play a constructive role for peace in our own way. Europe should not be a bystander. Since the dialogue between the US and Russia began early last year, Europe seems to have been sidelined. I have previously proposed here that the conflict is happening in Europe, and therefore Europe has the right and should join the negotiation process at the appropriate time. Europe should not be on the menu, but should be sitting at the table. China supports dialogue between Europe and Russia, as well as putting forward its own proposals and solutions. Through addressing the root causes of the issues, a more balanced, effective, and sustainable European security framework can be established to prevent similar events from happening again and achieve long-lasting peace and stability in Europe.
