The starter motor poses a fire hazard, BMW recalls multiple models worldwide.
On February 11th local time, German car manufacturer BMW Group announced a global recall of multiple series of vehicles. BMW stated that during product testing, it was found that the electromagnetic switch inside the starter motor may experience abnormal wear after multiple starts, causing difficulty in starting the vehicle or even preventing it from starting. There is also a risk of short circuit, which could lead to localized overheating of the starter motor. In extreme cases, there is a risk of fire while driving, so BMW advises owners not to leave their vehicles unattended while the engine is still running. BMW noted that potentially affected vehicles primarily use starter motor relays produced between July 2020 and July 2022. However, due to differences in production and transportation cycles between the starter motor and the whole vehicle, it is not possible to accurately determine the production time range of the vehicles. Additionally, vehicles that have had problematic starter motors replaced during maintenance may also be affected. The recall includes various BMW models such as the 2 Series coupe, multiple versions of the 3 Series, 4 Series, and 5 Series, 6 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series sedan, as well as X4, X5, X6, and Z4.
