Portuguese Prime Minister congratulates Seguro on being elected President and pledges to collaborate fully with the new President.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro issued a statement on the evening of February 8th local time congratulating the Socialist Party candidate Antonio Seguro on winning the second round of the presidential elections. Montenegro stated that the government will "fully cooperate and work together" with the newly elected president to promote the development of the country. The preliminary results announced by the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Affairs on the evening of the 8th local time showed that with approximately 95% of the votes counted, Socialist Party candidate Antonio Seguro had a significant lead with 66.06% of the votes in the presidential elections. This result essentially indicates that Seguro will succeed the current president, Desosa, as the newly elected president of Portugal.
