Report: The Department of Justice is investigating Netflix for anti-competitive behavior and its acquisition of Warner's deal.
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether Netflix is engaged in anti-competitive behavior, while also scrutinizing the streaming giant's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Studios and HBO Max streaming service. The investigation into Netflix's competition practices indicates that the Department of Justice is considering whether this Warner acquisition will strengthen its market position or potentially lead to a monopoly in the future. U.S. laws grant law enforcement agencies broad powers to oppose mergers that may lead to monopolies. The Department of Justice, in subpoenas issued to another entertainment company, requested information on "any other exclusionary practices that may appear reasonable but could consolidate its market or monopoly position." Netflix finalized the agreement in December of last year to acquire Warner Bros. at a cash price of $27.75 per share, with a total transaction value of $72 billion. Paramount, on the other hand, has made a hostile takeover bid of $77.9 billion, competing for all of Warner Bros.' assets, including its cable television networks division which includes networks such as CNN, Turner Broadcasting System, and Food Network.
