The Nigerian military claims to have killed a senior leader of Boko Haram.
The Nigerian military released a statement on February 1, stating that on the night of January 31, Nigerian troops carried out an operation in the Sambisa forest area of Borno State in northeast Nigeria, killing a senior leader of the extremist group "Boko Haram" and 10 other armed militants. The statement said that the slain Abu Khalid was the number two figure of "Boko Haram" in the region, responsible for coordinating operations and logistics. The Nigerian military also seized some firearms, ammunition, medical supplies, and logistics during the operation. The statement also mentioned that there were no casualties among Nigerian troops during the operation, and that they will continue to carry out operations against "Boko Haram" in the Sambisa forest and other areas. "Boko Haram" was founded in Nigeria at the beginning of this century, and has carried out frequent violent attacks in the northeastern part of the country, posing a security threat to neighboring countries such as Niger and Chad.
