The electricity systems in Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova experienced malfunctions, leading to a large-scale power outage.
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated on January 31 that he had received a report from Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmyhal and Energy Minister Shevchuk on the situation of the Ukrainian electricity grid. Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Shevchuk reported on his official social media platform on January 31 that at 10:42 am that day, there were technical failures in the 400 kV line between the power systems of Romania and Moldova, as well as the 750 kV line between western and central Ukraine, leading to a cascading blackout in the Ukrainian power grid and the automatic protection devices at substations being activated. The nuclear power plant units have reduced their load. Shevchuk stated that emergency power outage plans have been implemented in Kyiv city, Kyiv Oblast, Zhytomyr Oblast, and Kharkiv Oblast. He also emphasized that employees of the Ukrainian national electricity company are working hard to restore power, which is expected to be restored within the next few hours. One generator at a nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine has been shut down urgently.
