On January 28th, local time, Brazilian President Lula delivered a speech at the Latin America and Caribbean International Economic Forum in Panama, defending a more autonomous integration of Latin America and the Caribbean region, and condemning unilateralism, protectionism, and the resurgence of "hegemonic temptations" on the international stage. Lula stated that dividing the world into spheres of influence and engaging in neo-colonial invasions for strategic resources is an outdated practice and a regression of history. Lula emphasized that "infrastructure integration does not involve ideology" and defended the neutrality of the Panama Canal. He stated that for the past thirty years, the Panama Canal has been managed efficiently, safely, and without discrimination.
