Nearly a thousand hydrogen fuel cell buses have been put into operation, with a total cost exceeding 1 billion yuan. Each bus in Foshan receives a subsidy of 800,000 yuan, but they have been taken out of service.
Recently, journalists visited on site and found that more than 20 hydrogen-powered buses were neatly parked on the grass, with prominent signs on the front windshield of each bus stating "Hydrogen vehicle with enough mileage arranged to stop running, cannot operate" and "Temporarily parked vehicles." Station staff told reporters that these vehicles themselves have no malfunctions and can operate normally, but due to the high price of hydrogen, operating them is not cost-effective, so they have been temporarily suspended. This is only a small part of the hydrogen-powered buses currently suspended in Nanhai District, and Foshan is not the only place where hydrogen-powered buses have been suspended in the area. Foshan has a higher procurement volume of hydrogen-powered buses than many other places, which is related to local support for the hydrogen industry. As a key project for the demonstration and promotion of the hydrogen industry, Foshan has put into operation nearly a thousand hydrogen-powered buses since 2018, with a total cost exceeding 1 billion yuan. Many industry insiders, including relevant informed personnel from the Foshan government, told reporters that a combination of factors such as shrinking demand for public transportation, local fiscal pressure leading to insufficient subsidies, and high hydrogen prices, are the underlying causes of the suspension of hydrogen-powered buses in Foshan. Regarding the current suspension of some hydrogen-powered buses, reporters have sent inquiries to the Foshan Municipal Transportation Bureau, but as of the time of publication, they have not received a response.
