On January 28th, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council held a routine press conference. A reporter asked about the recent news that the total operating mileage of high-speed railways in the mainland has exceeded 50,000 kilometers, which has sparked heated discussion in Taiwan. Some opinions suggest that Taiwan has long been plagued by energy shortages and outdated infrastructure issues, and if mainland funds and technology are introduced, it would not be a problem to connect the Central Mountain Range and improve transportation in Hualien and Taitung. From there, there would no longer be concerns about road closures or landslides when traveling from Hualien or Taitung to Taipei, which would truly provide a sense of security. Some netizens also expressed their anticipation for the day when they can ride a high-speed train across the Taiwan Strait back and forth between the two sides, and asked for a comment on this. The spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhang Han, stated that the construction of high-speed railways in the mainland has attracted worldwide attention. The speeding high-speed trains make distances shorter, dreams bigger, and the horizon no longer distant. Peaceful reunification will create tremendous opportunities for the economic and social development of Taiwan, with a powerful motherland as a support, all aspects of Taiwan, including infrastructure, will be better. Taiwanese compatriots will join hands with mainland compatriots to share the dignity and glory of our great country, share the achievements of China's modernization, and embrace a bright and prosperous future of stability.
