British Prime Minister Stammer was invited to make an official visit to China from January 28th to 31st. According to a spokesperson from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 27th, this is the first time in 8 years that the British Prime Minister has visited China. During the visit, President Xi Jinping will meet with him, Premier Li Keqiang and Chairman Zhao Leji will also hold separate meetings with him to discuss bilateral relations and issues of common concern in depth. In addition to Beijing, Prime Minister Stammer will also visit Shanghai. In an interview with Bloomberg before his trip, Stammer stated that the UK does not need to choose between the US and China. He also emphasized that this visit will bring "significant opportunities" to British businesses. According to the BBC, Stammer stated that the UK will maintain "close ties" with the US in terms of business, security and defense, but he also stated, "it is not wise to bury our heads in the sand and ignore China". He said, "I am often asked to make a simple choice between countries, but I will not do that." Stammer mentioned that when he was pushing for a trade agreement between the UK and the US, people asked him to choose between the US and Europe, and he said, "I will not make that choice".
