U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to assist with Winter Olympics security? Milan Mayor "Not Welcome"
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on the 26th that its enforcement officers will participate in national security work during the Milan Winter Olympics and provide support to Italy. The mayor of Milan responded on the 27th, saying, "We do not welcome this." In a statement, ICE said, "During the Winter Olympics, the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) will provide support to the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the host country Italy to identify risks related to transnational criminal organizations." The statement also mentioned that ICE "clearly will not conduct immigration enforcement actions abroad" and that "all security work is under the jurisdiction of the Italian authorities." Two sources from the U.S. Embassy in Italy confirmed the news to the Associated Press. It is unclear whether the HSI has been involved in Olympic security work before.
