Hainan closes its borders and international passenger flow reaches a record high for a whole month.
As of January 18, 2026, the official launch of Hainan Free Trade Port's island-wide closed-loop operation coincided with the "full moon." During the first month, with the overlapping benefits of the visa-free entry policy and the continuous expansion of international routes, Hainan's international passenger flow reached a new high, with a year-on-year increase of over 60% in visa-free entry of foreign passengers, accounting for over 90% of the total number of foreign passengers entering during the same period, and the core indicators ranking at the forefront nationwide. Since the island-wide closure, the total number of foreign nationals entering and exiting Hainan has increased by nearly 50% at the Haikou Immigration Inspection Station. Among them, the number of foreign tourists entering Hainan visa-free has increased by over 60% compared to the same period last year, accounting for 93% of the total number of foreign tourists entering during the same period. Visa-free entry has become the main way for foreign tourists to enter Hainan.
