A transformer station failure in Tokyo, Japan caused disruptions to the morning commute during rush hour.
East Japan Railway Company announced on January 16 that in the early morning of that day, there was a malfunction at the Tamachi substation in downtown Tokyo, causing the Yamanote Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line to temporarily stop running, disrupting the morning commute. Passengers who were stuck were evacuated along the tracks with the assistance of firefighters and railway staff. The affected lines resumed operations after 1:00 pm local time on the same day. According to reports from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and Tokyo Fire Department, a fire occurred on the tracks near Tamachi Station in the morning of the 16th, with electrical equipment emitting smoke, which was extinguished about an hour and a half later. The East Japan Railway Company is currently conducting an investigation into the specific cause of the malfunction.
