Verizon Communications announced Wednesday evening that the company has resolved a major service outage that lasted for several hours, causing customers to be unable to make phone calls and send messages. A spokesperson for Verizon said that the outage began around 12pm Eastern Time and affected some customers' wireless voice and data services, particularly in the eastern part of the country. The company stated around 10pm Eastern Time that the issue had been resolved. The spokesperson stated, "Today, we let down many customers, and for that we deeply apologize." Verizon said that customers still experiencing issues should restart their devices to reconnect to the network. The company plans to provide account compensation to affected customers. According to the outage tracking website Downdetector, there have been over 1 million reports of issues with Verizon's services in the past 24 hours. A spokesperson for Downdetector stated that the crisis peaked shortly after Wednesday afternoon, with the number of reports submitted exceeding 178,000 at one point. This number is significantly higher than usual levels.
