On January 14th, the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges issued a notice adjusting the margin ratio for margin trading, increasing the minimum margin ratio for investors when buying securities on margin from 80% to 100%. This adjustment only applies to newly opened margin contracts. The margin ratio for A-share margin trading has undergone several changes in the past. In August 2006, the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges issued detailed rules for margin trading pilot implementation, stating that the minimum margin ratio for investors when buying securities on margin should not be lower than 50%, allowing for a maximum leverage of up to two times. In November 2015, the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges revised the rules, raising the margin ratio from 50% to 100%, allowing for a maximum leverage of one time.
